Limited Building Access & Hours

Updated April 28, 2020; the following information is subject to change.

As activity in many buildings on campus is reduced, effective Wednesday, April 29, exterior doors on campus buildings will remain locked (Salto secure access only) with the exception of the following:

Public-Access Buildings

Current activity on campus indicates that the Commons, EME, Science and University Centre will continue to provide ample informal learning spaces with room for appropriate physical distancing. Computer labs EME 2205, SCI 126, SCI 128 and SCI 234 will remain open.

Door nearest the Bookstore will remain open for bookstore business 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The Commons
8 a.m. – 8 p.m. (7 days a week)

Engineering, Management and Education (EME)
6 a.m. – 10 p.m. (7 days a week)

6 a.m. – 10 p.m. (7 days a week)

University Centre
5:30 a.m. – 10 p.m. (7 days a week)

SALTO-Access Buildings

Under UBC’s current Remote Working Arrangement pilot, those who are able to work from home should do so.

Who will still have building access?

Any member of the community who already has external building access on their Salto cards will retain this access. This includes anyone with access for exempted research during the current on-campus research curtailment.

In addition, all faculty and staff will have external entrance access added to their Salto cards for Administration, Arts, Science, Arts and Sciences Centre, Creative and Critical Studies, and the Fipke Centre.

Reichwald Health Sciences Centre and Upper Campus Health building remain Salto access only.

What if I forget my Salto card or key?

Contact the Campus Security dispatch office:

  • 250-807-9236 (non-emergency number)
  • In-person: Administration Building (east side of central courtyard)

Bring a Sweater

Some low-occupancy areas may be kept at cooler temperatures because heating or cooling levels are being adjusted in spaces that have reduced occupancy. Note: areas used for exempted research activity will not be included in heating/cooling system adjustments.

What’s Closed

The following spaces remain closed:

Library building until further notice
(see UBC Okanagan Library for online services)

Gymnasium/Hangar Fitness and Wellness Centre (see UBCO Recreation)

Instructional computer labs:

  • ART 215 (Arts building)
  • ASC 165 (Arts and Sciences Centre)
  • FIP 129 and FIP 133 (Fipke Centre)

Why reduce access?

The access changes will enhance security and reduce requirements for cleaning and servicing building systems, freeing up resources to concentrate on higher occupancy areas and project work. It also provides meaningful reductions in energy use.

  • The number of chairs in some spaces will be reduced to promote appropriate physical distancing.
  • Campus Security will continue to monitor all areas of campus.
  • Some food outlets on campus remain open but hours can change weekly. For details, visit Food Services.
