Indigenous reconciliation declaration signing
September 2019 Elders, chiefs and community members from the Syilx Okanagan Nation joined with students, faculty and staff at UBC Okanagan on September 24 to witness the historic signing of UBCO’s commitments toward reconciliation with Indigenous peoples.
The Commons building opens
January 2019 The $35-million “Commons” facility opens boasting a spectacular 400-seat classroom, hundreds of new study areas, a digital technology centre, a graduate student commons and a new café. Students contributed nearly $10 million to the project, paving the way for future generations to enjoy a world-class learning experience in a remarkable setting.
Alumni celebrate first Homecoming
October 2018 Alumni and community members are welcomed back to the UBC Okanagan campus for its first-ever Homecoming. The two-day event celebrated the growth and diversity of campus through numerous activities including a scavenger race led by Olympic champion and Amazing Race Canada host Jon Montgomery.
UBCO raises the Okanagan Nation Alliance flag
September 2018 Members from the Syilx Okanagan Nation and the UBC Okanagan community celebrate the permanent raising of the Okanagan Nation flag. The flag raising formally signifies UBC’s recognition of the Syilx Okanagan Nation in whose lands the university is situated.
